Of course the Carpenters are an American treasure. Richard''s genius in music compositions and arrangements and Karen''s exceptionally beautiful and soothing voice are beyond compare. All that is so very obvious to anyone who''s listened to their music. Todays youth are discovering the Carpenters and the proof is, in part, evident on YouTube''s "reactions" to music of the past where young people listen to music of their parents and grandparents days and rate it. I got great satisfaction witnessing when they first heard Karen''s voice. The look of surprise and joy made my heart leap for joy and at times even brought tears to my eyes. It makes me very happy to know new generations are discovering what true musical talent and excellent singing is all about in this age of "auto-tuned" vocals. When I need to decompress I simply play their music and instantly take a heavenly trip of relaxation, for about 45 minutes. I gave this CD four stars instead of five because Karen was still honing her gift at that time. The songs that stand out are the two hits "We''ve only just begun" and "Close to you". Two other notable songs are "Maybe it''s you" and "Crescent Noon". The latter showcases the strength and depth of Karen''s beautiful contralto voice. No other artists will ever touch the Carpenters'' place in music history. Buy this CD, you will be happy you did!!

Here''s an example of a CD surpassing (far surpassing) the LP version -- a remastered one, no less -- of a musical masterpiece. I sent back the first, defective (off-center spindle hole, noise in the grooves, muddy mix) LP of this album. The replacement, probably from the same batch, was as bad as the first. But rather than return the second vinyl version, I kept it for the cover, ordered this Japanese-made CD, and was thrilled with the result. It''s compact disc technology at its greatest: warm, rich, beautiful sound, and as well packaged as a compact disc can hope to be. I know LPs are enjoying a resurgence; let''s hope CDs turn the corner soon and make a comeback. When done right, they sound tremendous, superior at times to vinyl.

My favorite Carpenters album. One of the great classic albums of all time, marred only by Richard singing lead on one of the cuts ("I Kept On Loving You"). This should cost it a fraction of a star but I like Carpenters so much that I''m rounding it up to a full five. So many great songs here, but I guess my favorites are the haunting, atmospheric (and quite mystical) "Crescent Noon" (a rare departure from the typical romance lyric and written by Carpenter/Bettis) and "Another Song" (Carpenter/Bettis) which shows their ability to play music with a bit of a hard jazzy-psychedelic-prog-rockish edge (they never played this hard on any other album).

What I love about this CD is the song writers who''s songs are on this CD are among my favourite such as Lennon / McCartney, Bacharach / David, Williams / Nichols and Richard Carpenter / John Bettis. All of them wrote great songs.
The song Close To You I bought as a single when it was released in 1970 also being the first Carpenters song I heard here in Australia and I had not seen any photos of them also at the time I did not know they were brother and sister. I played that song on the family stereo over and over again it is such a great song due to Karen''s perfect vocal''s and Richard''s great arrangements.
Help is a classic song and the Carpenters version was played on the radio when the LP was released here in Australia and I must say I had not heard this song since then also what a treat to hear such a good Carpenters version now. I''ll Never Fall In Love Again was a big top 5 hit by Bobbi Gentrey here in Australia which was released about this same period and I loved Bobbi''s vocals on this song. Karen does a great version of the song with her clear smooth as silk voice and Richard is top class with his arrangements. Love Is Surrender I first came across this song on a DVD Carpenters Live At BBC in London 1970 I like Karen''s upbeat vocals and drumming also the imput by the band members plus Richard''s vocals.
We''ve Only Just Begun is a Carpenters classic and probably the best song written by the great Paul Williams. Mr Guder being a good song written by Richard and john Bettis is about there boss when they worked at Disneyland who wanted them to stick to the script but they would play requests.
It is very good CD to listen to when you consider Close TO YOU was a international number 1 hit single and the Carpenters toured the world for the first time and introduce themselves to all of us. Just two kids from Downey California.

I was 13 years old when this album was released. I was into rock bands like Deep Purple and the Grass Roots, and just starting to listen to Black Sabbath. So you could imagine my reaction when a neighbor friend of my parents gave me this tape for Christmas. First of all, at that time I had never heard of the Carpenters, and the only exposure to their music was some bank using "We''ve Only Just Begun" in their commercials. So I took one brief, two-song listen, and put it away. A couple years later, having trouble sleeping, I decided to put it in the tape player figuring it would bore me to sleep. And in that setting I couldn''t believe how beautiful the music was. Instead of helping me sleep I must have listened to it three times. Although there are a few weak songs (hence the 4 star rating instead of a 5) there are some wonderfully produced and original sounding pieces as well.

Believe it or not, the two hits on this CD are by far not the best songs on this album. While popular as easy-listening pop songs, "We''ve Only Just Begun" and "Close to You" feel like they were produced solely to be hits. To me, the best part of the tape was side two which, if you look at the sequence of songs on the CD, started with "Baby It''s You." Here you begin to find, with the possible exception of "Mr. Guder", a group of songs that just sound beautiful. Wonderful melodies, great harmonies, and above average lyrics set these songs way above the first six on the CD. My favorites are the aforementioned "Baby It''s You" (a Burt Bacharach song that had been done by just about everyone), "Crescent Moon (showing Karen''s ability to sing in a lower octave that you normally hear), and "Another Song" (an interesting mix of vocal & instrumental music). Other gems, "Maybe It''s You", "Reason to Believe" and "I kept on Loving You" (Sung by Richard Carpenter).

Of course I would recommend this to any Carpenter fan, although I would be surprised if you didn''t already have it. But also to fans of great and beautiful music. Even though I still prefer a harder guitar type of music I went ahead and bought this CD when my tape finally died and I still listen to it.

This album has been close to me (no pun intended) for last 40 years! I was in my early teens when my father got this album on vinyl for me. I have been listening to this album for all these years and Karen''s voice is still as fresh as I heard it first time way back then.

Good music never gets boring, if you like velvet smooth female vocals, great melodies, lush sounding background music, you ought to treat yourself with this album.

The cost of album today is same as what you pay for a meal at the McDonalds which you will forget you had after digesting it. This album will stay in your head for a long time to come.

Waking up recently with ''Mr Guder'' going through my head made me realise that I didn''t actually have the recording in my Carpenters collection.I remembered it well from a well worn cassette which I had made from borrowed LP''s back in the 70''s. A quick Amazon search revealed that ''Close To You'' was the missing album. How could I have missed such a gem? It is a really fascinating album because we can hear some of their older ideas as well as the eventual evolution to the classic Carpenters sound on Close To You and We''ve Only Just Begun, which fully feature Karen''s vocals with their massive multi-track harmonic backing. In remastered glory Mr Guder was even better than I remembered. Such a great quirky track, inspired by an old boss apparently. I was particularly looking forward to hearing the ''Ba ba da ba'' bit again which has always made me think of The Swingle Singers. Now who remembers them? Just to mention a couple of things to listen out for. Richard actually takes the lead vocal on I Kept On Loving You and the last track is an unusual offering (very 70''s, you can almost see the bubble light images projected on the walls!) The drums get a good thrashing and I have always assumed that it was Karen''s opportunity to show her drumming skills?, although Hal Blaine is recorded as the drummer for the album. So to sum up this is a fabulous old album with a good selection of rarely heard Carpenters stuff. Enjoy.

I originally got this on vinyl when I was just 14 and all my schoolfriends were lapping up glam rock or Pink Floyd. But seeing a bargain price on Amazon for the CD, i thought it time to consider a fresh purchase. This shows Richard and Karen approaching their peak with the beautiful harmonies and interesting re-workings. Tim Hardin''s Reason To Believe is not heart wrenching like Rod Stewart''s take but a gentle mid-tempo country charmer. The Beatles'' Help becomes a quirky number almost halfway to Keith Emerson & The Nice. Side one begins and ends with the timeless We''ve Only Just Begun and title track. However, my personal favourites are the two shortish numbers, Love Is Surrender and I Kept on Loving You, both heavily featuring Richard''s vocals. There''s lots of variety on "Close To You" right through to a modern jazz workout on the final track "Another Song". Nearly 40 years on, it''s still an entertaining listen.

This was the Carpenters'' breakthrough album an d it is quite brilliant both n terms of performance quality and production. I bought ''Close to You'' on vinyl whilst at University and people gave me some odd looks - not really what they expected from a lover of Deep Purple, Led Zep and ELP! But most recognised the quality in it when I played it to them. It is, by any judgement, a superb piece of work. At that time there was little to match the technical sophistication of the production, with the multi-tracked voices on "We''ve Only Just Begun" and "(They long to be) Close to You". The closest analogy at the time was probably the Beatles'' ''Because'' from Abbey Road. Karen Carpenter''s wonderfully smooth and distinctive voice is one of the greatest ever to grace popular music and her early loss was a tragedy. . Nowhere is her rich, tone-perfect singing better presented than on this record. The two huge hits referred to above probably need no introduction. But there are other memorable tracks. ''Reason To Believe'' is beautifully sung. ''Crescent Noon'' is soulful and quite beautiful and ''Mr Guder'' is a gem. This was the album that established the Carpenters as a class act. It combined some unique arrangements with a never-again voice. A joy to listen to, for lovers of all kinds of music. Highly recommended.
